Street Tree Planting Area

The street tree planting area is located between the fronting property line and the edge of the public street.

Street edges are owned by the city and should be carefully controlled as to size, access and egress points and what may be installed within, above or below this space. Curb cuts should be restricted and reduced in number allowing more space for street tree plantings, roadway signage and below ground utilities. Some communities require the developer of property frontage to plant the street edge with approved street trees. Additionally, the developer or private property owner fronting a public street is often required to maintain trees, shrubs and lawns which may be planted in the space at the edge of the public street.

The view from the public street is of public concern so landscape codes often require street trees to improve the view and shade the street especially near pedestrian walks. Street tree plantings and improvements to the edge of public streets within residential and commercial districts and should be viewed as is a necessary part of all street design and construction projects.

The street planting area is a shared area with public utilities both below and above the site.  Species of trees planted here must be carefully selected for rate of growth, tree height, leaf shed, root structure, sight lines and distance to corners. Always consult with the city arborist prior to digging or planting in the street tree planting area.

Calculations

Planting Area

Street Length= Property Line (facing street) + Property Line (facing street)

Plant Multiplier= Street Length / Seventy-five (75) Linear Feet

Sight Triangle

Speed limits greater or equal to forty (40) miles per hour the site triangle must measure fifteen (15) feet by sixty (60) feet. Speed limits less than forty (40) miles per hour the site triangle must measure fifteen (15) feet by forty-five (45) feet. The longer dimension runs parallel to the public street.

The street tree planting area shall contain a minimum number of Class A or Class B trees depending on the technical standards. Vegetation placed in this area must observe the site triangle and respect the infrastructure that the space is reserved for. A minimum of one hundred (100) square feet for each Class A and fifty (50) square feet for each Class B tree in non-paved area is required for each tree.

General Design Standards for Street Tree Planting Areas

A common design standard cites a preferred species, grade and size of tree and how it is spaced. Tree spacing is often twenty (20) to fifty (50) feet on center and clear of surface features, underground and overhead lines by ten (10) to twenty (20) feet.  Often they are equally spaced but may be clustered if the species selection allow. In urban areas medium and small trees are preferred in these restricted spaces in order to not interfere with below ground utility lines or overhead power lines.
